It consists of 36 multiple-choice questions. You will have 65 minutes to complete it. Reading Comprehension and Critical Reasoning questions have sub-types that are designed to test specific verbal skills. You will not need specialized knowledge of the subject matter to answer the questions. Reading Comprehension Measures your ability to understand words and statements, understand logical relationships between significant points, draw inferences, and follow the development of quantitative concepts. Specifically, the following reading skills will be tested: main idea, supporting idea, inference, application, logical structure, and style. Each Reading Comprehension passage comes with questions that ask you to interpret material, draw inferences or apply to a further context.

The passages discuss topics including social sciences and humanities, physical and biological sciences, or a business-related field. Critical Reasoning Measures your ability to make arguments, evaluate arguments, and formulate or evaluate a plan of action. Critical Reasoning questions are based on a short reading passage, usually fewer than words. Typically, the short text comes with a question that asks you which of the five answer options strengthens or weakens an argument, tells why the argument is flawed, or strongly supports or damages the argument. Sentence Correction Measures two broad aspects of your language proficiency. First, correct expression, referring to sentences that are grammatically and structurally sound.

Second, effective expression, referring to sentences that effectively express an idea or relationship clearly, concisely, and grammatically. Each Sentence Correction question presents a sentence, part or all of which is underlined. Beneath the sentence are five ways of phrasing the underlined part. Paying attention to grammar, word choice and sentence construction, you must choose the answer that produces the most effective sentence. After reading the passage, choose the best answer to each question. Answer all questions following the passage on the basis of what is stated or implied in the passage. Question Schools expect textbooks to be a valuable source of information for students. My research suggests, however, that textbooks that address the place of Native Americans within the history of the United States distort history to suit a particular cultural value system.

Lucias neighborhood story test answers

In some textbooks, for example, settlers are pictured as more humane, complex, skillful, and wise than Native Americans. In essence, textbooks stereotype and depreciate the numerous Native American cultures while reinforcing the attitude that the European conquest of the New World denotes the superiority of European cultures. Although textbooks evaluate Native American architecture, political systems, and homemaking, I contend that they do it from an ethnocentric, European perspective without recognizing that other perspectives are possible.

Lucias Neighborhood Story Pdf

One argument against my contention asserts that, by nature, textbooks are culturally biased and that I am simply underestimating children's ability to see through these biases. Some researchers even claim that by the time students are in high school, they know they cannot take textbooks literally. Yet substantial evidence exists to the contrary. Two researchers, for example, have conducted studies that suggest that children's attitudes about particular cultures are strongly influenced by the textbooks used in schools. Given this, an ongoing, careful review of how school textbooks depict Native Americans is certainly warranted. Which of the following would most logically be the topic of the paragraph immediately following the passage? A Specific ways to evaluate the biases of United States history textbooks B The centrality of the teacher's role in United States history courses C Nontraditional methods of teaching United States history D The contributions of European immigrants to the development of the United States E Ways in which parents influence children's political attitudes Answer: A.

Neurosciences We are finding out how the neural networks in the brain evolve by looking at different species. Our thoughts, memories and behaviours depend upon the correct connections between the 85 billion neurons in our brain, which evolved through trial and error. Other animals display amazingly different behaviours, so how can such an intricate system evolve in so many different ways?

In the Neighborhood

Answering this question can provide us with important insights on how brains work and what goes wrong in disease. Because human brains are so complicated, we are addressing this question by studying the brains of small fruit flies Drosophila as a simpler model system, and in particular their sense of smell known as the olfactory system. Surprisingly, the brain networks controlling our sense of smell and those of flies are incredibly similar, which allow us to draw general principles on how brains evolve from our studies in these insects.

Lucia's Grace

To discover these principles, we use a wide range of scientific techniques to measure the activity of nerve cells in different species of fruit flies and monitor their behaviour in the lab. By investigating the genetic, physical and behavioural differences between these species, we can begin to understand how various aspects of the nervous system have evolved and changed over time. We are also studying the sense of smell in disease-carrying pests like the tsetse fly. This will allow us to develop more advanced and specific technologies to control them and prevent the spread of the diseases they transmit. Share the page.

Journeys Series Reading Assessments Saturday, August 31, I have had a ton of email questions wanting to know what I use for assessments with the Journeys reading series. They haven't learned those words yet unless they walk in your door reading on a second grade or higher level. Some of the answers are too long for beginning first graders to read.
